2-Tert. Butyl 1,4 Di-Hydroxy Benzene.
TBHQ (TERTAIRY BUTYL HYDROQUINONE) CHEMICAL NAME: 2-Tert. Butyl 1,4 Di-Hydroxy Benzene. EMPIRICAL FORMULA: C10H14O2 MOLECULAR WEIGHT: 166.22 CAS NUMBER: 1948-33-0 APPLICATIONS TBHQ is largely used in edible oils & fats & related food products. The underlying role of TBHQ is to retard the oxidative deterioration of these products, effectively extending their "shelf life". TBHQ finds use in a variety of products such as essential oils, natural colours, confectionery, peanut butter, powdered dairy products, instant noodles, cosmetics, hair oils and many more. TBHQ is particularly effective in stabilising unsaturated fats and oils, especially polyunsaturated frying oils. In frying oils TBHQ not only increases the number of fries possible per batch of oil, it also "carries through" to the fried food, effectively increasing the fried food's shelf life. TBHQ is also used as polymerisation inhibitor for resins & unsaturated polyesters. ADVANTAGES IN USING TBHQ - Easy to incorporate in fats and oils.
- Good solubility in fats and oils.
- Does not discolour in presence of iron and metal complexes.
- Does not produce any odour when added to edible oils & fats.
- Stable at high temperatures and less volatile than BHA.
- It is a free flowing crystalline material, thus can be handled easily.
- Effective at low concentration. Only 2 kg of TBHQ is required for 10 metric tons of any edible oil.
- Offers carry through protection to fried foods.
- In edible oils and fats, TBHQ is the safest option in its class.
Storage Store in well-closed, light resistant nonmetallic containers. Specification - Description: White crystalline powder
- Melting range: 126.5°C to 128.5°C
- Solubility: Soluble in alcohol & ether, insoluble in water
- Assay: Min 99%
