Estragole (p-allylanisolemethyl chavicol) is a phenylpropene, a natural organic compound. Its chemical structure consists of abenzene ring substituted with a methoxy group and a propenyl group. It is an isomer of anethole, differing with respect to the location of the double bond. It is a colorless liquid, although impure samples can appear yellow. It is a component of various trees and plants, including turpentine (pine oil), anise, fennel, bay, tarragon, and basil. It is used in the preparation of fragrances.
                  Hundreds of tonnes of basil oil are produced annually by steam distillation of Ocimum basilicum (common basil). This oil is mainly estragole but also contains substantial amounts of linalool. Estragole is the primary constituent of essential oil of tarragon (comprising 60-75%), pine oil, turpentine, fennel, anise (2%), Clausena anisata and Syzygium anisatum.

Estragole is used in perfumes and as a food additive for flavor. Upon treatment with potassium hydroxide, estragole converts toanethole.

A.       The light absorption in the range 230 to 360 nm of a 0.0005% w/v in ethanol (95%) exhibits a maximum at about 258 nm, absorbance at about 258 nm, 0.44 to 0.47

B.   To about 10 mg in a test tube add 1 ml of           sodium carbonate solution, heat to boiling for 30 seconds and cool (solution A) .To a further 10 mg in a test tube add 1 ml of sodium carbonate solution, the substance partly dissolves (solution B). Add at the same time to each of solutions A and B 5 ml of aminophenazone solution and 1 ml of potassium ferricyanide solution and mix. Solution B is yellow to orange brown. Solution A is orange to Red and the colour is clearly more intense than any similar colour that may be obtained with solution B..

4. Appearance of solutionA 10% w/v solution in ethanol (95%) is clear or not more opalescence than Opalescence standard OS1 prepared by 5.0 ml of Opalescence standard & 95 ml of water .and not more intensely coloured than reference solution(BYS6) prepared by mixing 1.5 ml ferric chloride colorimetric solution, 0.8 ml cobaltous chloride colorimetric solution, 0.2 ml cupric sulphate colorimetric solution and 97.5 ml of 1% w/v HCl solution.
5. AcidityDissolve 1.0 g in sufficient ethanol (95%) to produce 10 ml.  To 2 ml of the solution add 3 ml of ethanol (95%), 5 ml of carbon dioxide-free water and 0.1 ml of bromocresol green solution. Not more than 0.1 ml of 0.1M sodium hydroxide is required to change the colour of the solution.
6. ChlorideNot more than 500 ppm.
7. SulphateHeat 2 g with 100 ml of water, cool, add sufficient water to restore the original volume and filter.  To 10 ml of the filtrate add 0.15 ml of dilute hydrochloric acid and 0.1 ml of barium chloride solution; no turbidity is produced within 10 minutes.

Characteristics: A high molecular weight, partially hydrolyzed vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate resin, made in a two-step process, having a composition of approximately 90 percent vinyl chloride, 4 percent vinyl acetate, 6 percent vinyl alcohol, with a hydroxyl content of approximately 2.3 percent. VAH has excellent adhesion on PET, resin primer, paper, PVC, ABS, pre-treatment of PE and OPP. VAH has good compatibility with other film-forming material, such as alkyd resins, polyurethane elastomers, isocyanate resin, melamine resin, urea-formaldehyde, epoxy polymers and so on. So VAH often used with other film-forming material in order to improve the coating performance, and enhance paint adhesion, flexibility, tenacity, hardness and chemical resistance. The hydroxyl functional group  permits cross linking reactions for thermo set , obtaining excellent chemical and water resistance.

 

Solubility: VAH can be dissolved in relatively strong solvent/diluent combinations, such as 50 percent ketone/50 percent aromatic hydrocarbon, to produce resin solutions of 22-25 percent solids. Ketone is a particularly good solvent, and esters is the relatively weak solvent. Chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dichloroethane and 1,2 - dichloroethane can completely dissolve VAH, and methyl chloroform and tetrachloroethane can only swell it. Aromatic hydrocarbons have a good role in the swelling, generally using with ketone.

 

Application: VAH can be used for a wide range of coatings applications, including marine anti-corrosion paint, gravenu ink, chassis paints, maintenance, PU and wood finishes, paper coatings, PET inks, interbedded adhesive, adhesive for magnetic tape and carbon ribbon.
